Once I passed 0:10:00 Walt Whitman is one of the most important poets in American literature. His main work, Leaves of Grass, was written over a period of forty years, and describes human nature, society, and the natural world, both physically and philosophically. Many have speculated about Whitman's private life, to this day. Whitman never wrote publicly about his personal relationships. In 1860, he published his poem "Once I Passed Through a Populous City", an aphoristic account of a romantic relationship with an unknown woman. In 1925, the original handwritten copy of the poem was discovered, in which Whitman writes, however, not about a woman but about an affair with a man in an anonymous city, which may have been his first physical experience of love. Whitman did not dare to publish the original version of his poem, because of the social prejudices of his time. To this day, only the altered version is printed in most anthologies. "Once I passed" is dedicated, on the one hand, to the obviously autobiographical context with all its personal drama, and on the other hand to the content of the poem itself, the profoundly quiet, yet powerful story of two lovers.

The fear brought upon the girl by her family outweighs the horrible folk mythology, making her real life out to be more of a real “hell” for her than the underworld in her dreams.

Four Souls of Coyote
Four Souls of Coyote
Hungary
Director: Alexandra Németh
1:43:15

Billed as an epic adventure based on a Native American creation myth, the film highlights the increasingly pressing need to live in harmony with the environment — before it is too late. Set in the present day, Native Americans confront the crew of an oil pipeline project, just down the hill from the land of their ancestors. The grandfather evokes the ancient tale of their Creation myth, reminding all of us that the challanges facing humanity are universal, and we need to find our place in the great circle of creatures. Through adventures filled with animals, magic, hunger, greed and the sacred circle of all creations, the story gives us hope that humans can correct our course and preserve our species’ existence on Earth. The film is created and directed by Áron Gauder who made a splash on the global animation scene with his feature debut, The District!, which was a favorite at festivals, screening at Toronto and picking up awards at Zagreb, Ottawa, Krok, Sitges, Kiev, Seoul and Annecy, where it won the Cristal for Feature Film. The film’s primary aim is to offer a cinematic escape for audiences, presenting a magical world inspired by Native American folklore that takes us back to the wonders of life. The animated retelling of Coyote’s universal creation myth is teamed with messages about sustainability and shared responsibility. Aimed at audiences of all ages, the project makes use of 2D and 3D, paintings and drawings created by Gauder himself. The film’s music was selected from authentic Native American songs. "Stepping into the wonders of the tribal universe with the blending of the highest form of artistic storytelling, the Four Souls of Coyote is a gift to the wonders of humanity and the mystery of tribal people." /Charles Cambridge, PhD, University of Colorado, enrolled member of the Navaho Tribe/

La Gaceta: 100 years and 3 Generations Behind America’s Only Trilingual Newspaper
United States, Florida, Local
Director: Lynn Marvin Dingfelder
1:00:00

For the past 100 years Tampa has been a melting pot of latin cultures and La Gaceta has preserved and chronicled all of it. As newspapers nationally struggle to survive... La Gaceta successfully celebrates a century of news, political drama, threats, Hoover’s FBI, communist witch-hunts, along with a wonderful collection of stories and vintage photographs depicting everyday life over the past century. This newspaper has been a mainstay for generations and survives as a result of a local family’s perseverance and dedication to community. Our La Gaceta documentary tells the Manteiga family’s extraordinary story... their fears, struggle and century of success. La Gaceta is the only trilingual newspaper in the United States. This documentary honors that by also being trilingual.

Faced with immigrating to the US from Cuba alone as children – via a secret program called Operation Pedro Pan that received over 14,000 children between 1960 and 1962 – this short documentary follows two former “Pedro Paners” who agreed to share their insights and contemplations on the impact this event had on their lives and what we all have to learn from it today. Through their memories, they re-witness the slow decay of their idyllic life in Cuba and recall the haunting rise of Fidel Castro’s dictatorship in the early 60s, which causes them to flee through the secret airlifts coordinated by the Catholic Church, the US State Department and people on the ground in Cuba. Having both dedicated their careers in service to their adopted homeland and reaching the highest echelons of the CIA and City Government, our contributors’ parallel stories intertwine throughout the film. They intimately share their gratitude for the incomprehensible sacrifice of their parents who made this unthinkable decision to separate from their children in the hopes of giving them a better life and reflect on what they gained from this selfless act; ultimately realizing the truth of the Cuban saying that even from the worst of things, good things will come: “No hay mal que por bien no venga.” The director’s mother was also a Pedro Pan child and is the inspiration for the film. Ric Prado is a New York Times bestselling author of the book "Black Ops: The Life of a CIA Shadow Warrior" released in March 2022. Guillermo Vidal was the 44th Mayor of the City of Denver and the author of the book "Boxing for Cuba" published in 2007.

"We're just ordinary people, doing extraordinary things." Follow the deeply-emotional journey of ten athletes with neuromuscular disorders and amputations competing at the CrossFit Games. Through a global pandemic, indefinite closures, the fight for social justice, and changes of leadership, the CrossFit community was not exempt from a single challenge the world faced in 2020. CrossFit, in both the sport and the fitness regimen, employing an estimated hundreds of thousands of coaches, athletes, entrepreneurs, and employees in associated businesses, and 15,000-plus gyms across the world, would be forever defined by the actions it took as it picked itself up, dusted itself off, and returned to the bar for another rep. It was this very work ethic, as a philosophy, ingrained in the community from the early days of the brand, which would nurture something neglected, foster something beautiful, and change the public perception of what CrossFit is, who belongs within the doors of a gym, and what CrossFit means for the next generation. ADAPT.
